Beyond the Grid

Braimo Shamu
Barbershop owner at Maendaenda Kiosk, Dete in Hurungwe District
To energise local economies, we deployed eight solar-powered container kiosks across the country. These kiosks provide reliable power to small businesses in remote areas, where national grid and mini-grid solutions are not feasible.
Braimo Shamu’s barbershop exemplifies energy’s transformative impact. Once operating beneath a tree with battery-powered clippers and known only to locals, he now works in a dedicated, weather-protected space with reliable power and greater visibility to the market.
‍
Braimo’s business is among 64 diverse SMEs demonstrating the viability of off-grid energy kiosks where national grid infrastructure and solar mini-grids are unavailable.

We implemented 8 such kiosks, complemented by comprehensive training in renewable energy maintenance, skills development, and market expansion.
64
micro and small enterprises housed in eight off-grid energy kiosks across 2 locations in the country.
▲ The solar-powered energy kiosks have become a nucleus of activity and development, including: convenient device charging, bus drop-off and pick-up point, and community entertainment centre.
