The Bridge to Resilience

Tafadzwa Kafurandi
Agricultural Extension Officer with the Ministry of Agriculture in Chimanimani District
Agricultural Extension Officers are pivotal in driving climate-smart agriculture, directly impacting the food security of entire villages. Recognising their crucial role, we are supporting the Ministry of Agriculture to invest in these catalysts of transformative farming practices
When her mother was unable, a young Tafadzwa would attend the village farmers’ meetings on her behalf. She was fascinated by how the agricultural extension officer’s guidance determined her family’s food security and even ensured her new clothes for Christmas!
‍
Today, Tafadzwa herself serves as an agricultural extension worker, guiding over 660 households achieve food security - this time against a changing climate.
‍
Despite 2024 bringing one of the worst droughts in five decades, Tafadzwa’s farmers demonstrated remarkable resilience. They not only maintained food security but also achieved significant milestones: acquiring household assets, supporting their children’s education, and diversifying into non-agricultural income streams.
