Energy poverty remains a significant challenge, particularly for those living in remote locations.

National statistics reveal that at least 2 in 5 households lack access to grid or off-grid electricity.

In rural areas, it is estimated that over 95% of the population relies on firewood for cooking and heating.

Zimbabwe loses an estimated 257,000 ha of forest per year from deforestation.

In the Zambezi Valley, deforestation is rampant due to the high demand for firewood and the clearing of land for agriculture.

In addition, collecting firewood takes up productive time for women and young people who are mostly tasked with the responsibility.

In the Zambezi Valley, collecting firewood can also be perilous, leading to human-wildlife conflicts.

Introducing the biogas solution: a renewable energy source generated through the breakdown of animal waste inside a sealed container, known as a digester.

Tinazwo Chidongo from Chikafa village in Mbire District, along the border with Mozambique, shares her experience:
"I no longer have to fetch firewood, and that has made a tremendous difference. Now, I have more time to engage in other productive activities instead of spending it on gathering firewood."

Tinazvo's household serves as a demonstration site for the use of biogas, established with support from Environment Africa.
The installation of biogas is just one of several initiatives aimed at safeguarding wildlife and nature in the Zambezi Valley, while also promoting sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

This effort is led by the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Tourism & Hospitality, with support from the Global Environment Facility and UNDP.
