Meet Richard, an enthusiastic agriculture extension (AGRITEX) officer in Chipinge.

Through his own initiative, Richard's research led to discovery of an exciting opportunity for farmers under his care - growing and selling sesame seed to buyers from Mozambique.

Through his guidance, the farmers realised increased yields and significant returns from the sales of their crops.

To improve abilities of extension workers' like Richard, comprehensive training programmes were implemented to update their knowledge and skills.

A total of 483 extension officers received training on the Farmer Field School (FFS) approach, Soil and Water Conservation, and Good Agricultural Practices.

With their newfound knowledge, these extension officers trained 6,900 lead farmers, creating a community of learning and skill development.

Additionally, 230 farmer field schools were established, providing platforms for farmers to learn and apply good farming practices on their own plots.

The impact has been remarkable. Farmers in these areas achieved harvest yields 25%-75% higher than the national average for various crops, showcasing the transformative power of investing in extension services.

The Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water & Rural Development is training extension workers in climate-smart agriculture methods, with support from the Green Climate Fund and UNDP.

This initiative aims to enhance the resilience of farmers in the dry southern region of Zimbabwe.
