Reflections

Opening Perspectives

A Reflection on 2024 by our Resident Representative, Dr. Ayodele Odusola
Q: How would you characterise 2024?

A: Zimbabwe made strides in infrastructure, economic stabilisation, and policy reforms, but faced compounding challenges: a historic drought left 7.7 million food-insecure, strained energy supplies, and amplified existing economic pressures.

Globally, shifting politics and climate urgency reshaped priorities. For the ordinary man, woman and child, it was a tough year.

Q: In such a dynamic environment, how did UNDP align its work to the country’s most pressing needs?

A: Climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy investments, and policy advocacy took centre stage. Most importantly, it remains an honour to be able to bring people together—because solutions thrive when everyone has a seat at the table.

And yes, we’re practicing what we preach by making our own operations green.

Q: This year’s annual report carries the theme ‘People’. What is the story you are telling?

A: Simple - At its heart, our work is about the people. Everyday, we try to answer a key question: How can we make people’s lives better?

Despite the odds, Zimbabwe’s resilience stems from its remarkably determined people. In this report, we share their journeys: not just those we serve, but the partners and change-makers walking alongside us.

Q: What achievements stand out as particularly transformative for people?

A: Working hand-in-hand with partners, we channelled nearly US$154 million in development support.
We are proud to be a part of the work that:

  • kept more than 1.2 million people on life-saving HIV treatment and strengthened the health system.
  • contributed to a reduction in hardship for nearly 400,000 people during the past drought - proving the value of investing in building resilience.
  • added 400 hectares of climate smart irrigation, enabling year-round productivity.
  • provided key strategic support to the for Debt Dialogue and Arrears Clearance process.
  • expanded the cumulative renewable energy installations to 13.8 megawatts, ensuring reliable power across sectors.
  • reversed wildlife poaching trends and stabilised animal populations.
restored the 1.8 million cubic metre capacity Wanezi Dam.

These aren’t just numbers—they’re lifelines.

Q: What collaborations helped drive these results?

A: UNDP’s essence lies in connecting people, ideas, and resources. We’re deeply grateful to the Government for their leadership, our development partners for their trust, implementing organisations for their hard work, and every single man, woman and child on the ground who made this possible – Siyabonga. Maita Basa. Thank you.

Q: What big ideas will shape UNDP’s approach moving forward?

A: Our long experience gives us an advantage - the opportunity to continuously learn. Three lessons shape our path:

  • Adapt faster: Solutions must evolve with global and local shifts.
  • Maximize infrastructure: Ensure every dam, clinic, and solar plant delivers full value.
  • Design for sustainability: Bake long-term impact into every project from day one.
Q: As we look ahead to 2025, what opportunities do you see for accelerating Zimbabwe’s development progress?

A: Our priorities are clear: First, safeguard hard-won development gains. Second, unlocking Zimbabwe’s potential by responsibly harnessing AI and emerging tech. The road is steep but the momentum is real - we are all in.
